Heal with Water...Europe's Spa Towns

Updated: Sep 18

‘Taking the cure’, externally and internally.

“The Great Spas of Europe exhibits an important interchange of innovative ideas that influenced the development of medicine, balneology and leisure activities from around 1700 to the 1930s. This interchange is tangibly expressed through an urban typology centred on natural mineral springs and devoted to health and leisure. Those ideas influenced the popularity and development of spa towns and balneology throughout Europe and in other parts of the world.” Unesco, World Hertiage Convention.

It wasn’t until I was stranded in the USA, during COVID, that I became fearfully aware of not having healthy WATER. In the 60s, when I was just a kid, I accidentally drank from the creek on my father’s farm, only to be rushed later to the hospital. Human waste was being dumped into the creek. Now fast forward, my landscaper shared that the most popular spring water currently being sold in Florida has been contaminated by herbicides from local farms. I hadn’t realised that in the last 16 years of living in Europe, healing water had influenced a way of life for me, so when COVID hit, my biggest concern would be finding healing mineral water in glass bottles.

Many people around the world would not consider drinking tap water as dangerous or that drinking water from a plastic bottle is less than healthy and is laced with toxins from the bottle itself. Once you start drinking healing water with a high quality mineral content, there is no turning back. Some people believe that if they simply purify their homes with the most “expensive” water purifier on the market—they are safe. Purified water is not healing to the body. Healing water must have minerals and purified water has none. My intention for this blog is to create awareness around the water we consume internally and externally, then determine whether, or not, we are getting enough minerals.

Therme Bad. There are hundreds of mineral Bads (baths or Thermes) in Germany. During the summer, hubby and I set out to explore our healing options with Therapeutic Grade Thermes. We wanted to see if we could improve the way we felt in our bodies—bye, bye joint pain. I had a list of fifteen Thermes that I wanted to explore. Juergen and I ended up visiting seven, so my research will continue when we get back from the USA. Please keep in mind, I was unable to take photos once inside the Thermes, so the websites have been provided—have fun.

Top Thermes: In order to be considered for my top picks, the facility had to be clean, offer a variety of baths with a wide range of temperatures—interesting sauna areas—herbal steams— infrared light therapy and of course great food/restaurant. Bad Kissingen was the furthest distance away, but by far our favourite Therme. This Therme was a bit newer, larger, and had more to offer than the others we visited. One thing that notably stood out was that the water felt like silk, which really surprised us. A great feature was an intense sound and light healing bath (with an actual healer gently moving a person in the water), chairs with infrared therapy, and a mineral steam room (relax and breathe in minerals)—pure heaven. Also, the sauna area was adorable with small German-styled huts heated with real fire, so you could smell the wood burning. It was like being up in the moutains at a ski chalet. https://www.kisssalis.de.

Our second choice was Bad Nauheim and it was the closest to us. This spa was the newest and is still being renovated. The swimming pool woke the senses up with its fresh, cool waters while the baths took the body to unknown high levels of heat. This facility was clean and the restaurant food was the best of all the Thermes. I believe the food was sustainable/organic and locally sourced. https://www.bad-nauheim.de.

Bad Emser was our third top choice. This therme was on the Emser River and had a very green outdoor space. It was extremely peaceful just to listen to the flow of the river. The swimming pool was extra large making it easy to enjoy a private swim, but the best part of this experience was the panoramic view of the river from within the sauna. OKAY—Who would go for any view, let alone panoramic, while enduring extreme heat inside a very dry sauna? We did and it was lovely. https://www.emser-therme.de.

From Therme to Bath: Near the town of Tegernsee in Barvaria, Germany you will find Bad Wiessee which is home of Germany’s strongest iodine, sulfur spring. This 300,000 years old healing water took our Therme experince to the next level. Jod-Schwefel bad was a one-of-a kind wellness experience. Not only was the bath relaxing and deacidifying, but it also has been medically proven to strengthen the immune system. The mind and body was indeed in perfect harmony with just one private bath. In addition, the iodine-sulfur mist was the perfect treatment for overstrained, computer-eyes and congested lungs. https://www.jodschwefelbad.de

The benefits of understanding water and how it can heal us is so important in the times we live. The citizens of the world must demand countries to keep the natural springs safe, clean, and prepared for a future full of healthy water to soak in and drink. Please wake up to a new water awareness and then teach others to do the same.
